Costco Implements Major Changes Including Controversial Membership Perk
Retail giant Costco has enacted three significant operational shifts over the past year, sparking mixed reactions among its 79.6 million members. The warehouse club's latest moves come as the global retail market projects 6% annual growth toward $27.3 trillion by 2030, according to Mordor Intelligence.
Most notably, Costco raised membership fees for the first time in seven years. Effective September 2024, Gold Star and Business members saw annual fees increase from $60 to $65, while Executive members now pay $130 instead of $120. The premium tier continues offering 2% cashback on qualifying purchases.
The changes reflect Costco's dynamic approach in an industry where razor-thin margins demand constant innovation. While maintaining its value proposition, the retailer risks alienating price-sensitive members through these adjustments.
